Where is Mercer Island

Located in the center of Lake Washington, Mercer Island is an island and city in King County. It is connected by a bridge, I-90, to Seattle on the west and Bellevue to the east. The area is over 5 miles long and 2 miles wide and has an island feel. The population is around 25,748 according to the April 2020 census.

The city of Mercer Island was incorporated from East Seattle on July 5, 1960. It comprised the island minus the 70-acre business district. Just over one month later, on August 9, the town of Mercer Island was incorporated from that business district. The two municipalities then merged as the city of Mercer Island on May 19, 1970.

Mercer Island offers 475 acres of parks and open space. There are three public beaches and over 50 hiking trails. With so many places to enjoy and experience nature, it is no wonder this is a highly sought destination to reside.

Furthermore, there are a lot of qualities that attract people to live here. Professionals can enjoy an easy commute and retirees have many opportunities to be involved in activities throughout the community. Also, the Mercer Island School District is considered to be #1 in Washington according to Niche statistics. The community really pushes for academic progress and has impressive stats of 87% proficiency in reading and 83% proficiency in math.

Scenic Spots

One scenic spot on the island to visit is Luther Burbank Park. This 73-acre park is situated along Lake Washington and fosters a variety of wildlife. There’s a swimming beach, an amphitheater, three tennis courts, public fishing pier, and group picnic areas. Many animals live in the wetlands that occupy the north and south ends of the park. You can expect to see over 130 different species of birds, as well as raccoons, beavers, muskrats, tree frogs, and rabbits.

Another great destination is Groveland Beach Park. With its western exposure, the view over the lake is quite beautiful. It’s a small park with picnic tables, a playground, a beach, and an overlook, Also, it’s not too crowded, especially in the evening.

On the edge of Island Point, located on the island’s south end, is a scenic viewpoint called “The Lookout.” Viewers can take in the breathtaking Mount Rainier on a clear day.

Mercer Island’s Town Center is a dynamic and ever-evolving commercial hub. Residents of the island get together to eat at places such as The Roanoke Inn, Haps Burgers, and Sushi Joa. A local favorite Mioposto Pizzeria serves Neapolitan-style pies, pasta, sandwiches, and cocktails. If you are craving something sweet breeze on over to Island Treats where you can get everything from caramallows to sour rainbow belts. They even offer sampler gift boxes.

Some local shops to visit would be Island Books and Terra Bella, a home goods and gift store. After shopping one can grab a drink at Barrels Wine Bar. Offering over 250 bottles of wine and craft beer, plus some tasty food, it is sure to be a memorable experience.

The Mercer Island Farmers Market operates most Sundays between June through October. they offer local and fresh produce, including vegetables, fruit, and some crafts. Residents come together to support local farmers and their communities. There is also a special Harvest Market that occurs in November.

Another communal activity on the island is Summer Celebration. This occurs every year, one week after the Fourth of July, and has been a 30-year tradition. The event takes place at Luther Burbank Park, a waterfront park located at the north end. At Summer Celebration there is a host of activities for the whole community, food trucks, and a fireworks show!
