Laurelhurst is a Seattle neighborhood located on the shores of Lake Washington and Union Bay. The Laurelhurst neighborhood was largely developed in the 1920’s and abounds in waterfront homes with delightful architecture. Surrounded by the waters of Lake Washington, many Laurelhurst homes enjoy impressive views of Lake Washington and the Cascade Mountains.
History
This neighborhood was once home to a seasonal campground for the Duwamish Indian tribe, who called their location Sahlouwil. In 1900, a developer began building the 40-acre Seattle Golf & Country Club here, and in 1910 Laurelhurst was annexed by the city of Seattle. Laurelhurst was once covered with woods across the peninsula, and had a wild marsh that was an aboriginal hunting and fishing paradise. Today a large portion of this lush area remains alive with native plants and animals.
Points of Interest
Residents of Laurelhurst enjoy the private Laurelhurst Beach Club, which features a swimming beach with a lifeguard on duty, sailing lessons, and a high dive. Laurelhurst playfield is a popular park located in the center of the neighborhood. The renowned Seattle Children’s Hospital is also in the neighborhood, and nearby University Village is great for shopping and restaurants.
