Where is First Hill in Seattle?
Located next to Seattle’s downtown retail core, First Hill is a mix of high-rise luxury condos and apartments, a few historic mansions, landmarks and hospitals. In fact there are so many hospitals, the neighborhood is often referred to as “Pill Hill” by Seattleites. In addition, the historic neighborhood is located near other popular Seattle neighborhoods. For example, Capitol Hill is to the north and the Central District is to the east.
What is living in First Hill Seattle like?
First Hill Seattle is a cultural hub. The neighborhood features the Frye Art Museum, Museum of Museums and the Mini Museum of Street Art. In addition, the Roman Revival Town Hall Seattle is a cultural venue and community spotlight. It hosts lectures, author readings and concerts. Furthermore, the Sorrento Hotel is Seattle’s oldest hotel. The hotel is said to be haunted, but it does not stop people from frequenting its bar, restaurant, and fireside room. Casual eateries surround the Seattle hospital district on Madison Street all the way to Seattle University which is also in the neighborhood. The Pike and Pine corridor (two parallel streets) is located on the neighborhood’s border with Capitol Hill. The corridor is a lively area with a plethora of bars and restaurants.
If you live in the area, you most likely live in a condo or an apartment. Originally the neighborhood was dominated by mansions when the city was very young (early 1900’s), but almost all of them have been replaced by apartments or condos.
Is First Hill Seattle a Safe Area to Live?
Living downtown in a major metropolitan city has its perks. You will find luxury apartments and condos on First Hill, but most have secure entries. Some have a concierge like door service available. Many residence feel safe to walk around the neighborhood grocery shopping, heading to work, or just getting a coffee.

One can find affordable apartments to luxury condos on First Hill. There are a ton of choices for rentals at all price ranges. The Marlborough is a 1928 building remodeled into luxury apartments. In addition, the area is home to some of the most historic condos in Seattle. Indeed, 1223 Spring Street is the most iconic Seattle condo building. Finished in the 1929, the classic 12 story brick building, has only two condos per floor, except for the top floor which features a nearly 4,000 sq ft penthouse. Other luxury condos, include the First Hill Plaza with a full time concierge, on-site management, tennis courts, garden terrace, rooftop gym, pool and party room. Furthermore, with increased height limits in recent years and close vicinity to hospitals, more luxury assisted-living and retirement homes have popped up.
